Dog License FAQs

Frequently asked questions about Lucas County dog licensing

Why should I license my dog?

Licensing your dog ensures that they can be returned home quickly if they run away. Additionally, if your dog is wearing their license, Lucas County Canine Care and Control will hold them for longer and will contact you before assuming they are abandoned and putting them up for adoption.

Licensing your dog is also required by Ohio law (ORC 955.22). Failure to license may result in a misdemeanor and a fine.

I lost my dog's tag. Can I get a replacement?

Yes! Replacement tags are $5.00.

You can request a replacement tag in person at the Lucas County Auditor's Office on the sixth floor of One Government Center in downtown Toledo. Or, you can also mail $5.00 with a note requesting a replacement dog tag to our office. Be sure to include your dog's name, your name, and your address.

I found a lost dog! What should I do?

You can look up the owner's information and contact them yourself by searching the dog's license number through the dog license portal at www.co.lucas.oh.us/lostdog.

You can also call Lucas County Canine Care and Control at 419-213-2800 or call your local police non-emergency line.

My dog is microchipped.
Can I add this information to their account?

Yes you can, and we encourage you to do so!

If a lost dog is found without their dog tag, but they do have a microchip number registered to their dog license account, then Lucas County Canine Care and Control can still contact the owner.

You can add your dog's microchip number when you license them online, if you include it with the dog's name when you mail in your dog license renewal form, or by calling the Lucas County Auditor's Office at 419-213-4406.

Please be aware that updating your license information and address does not update your microchip record. To do this, you will need to contact the microchip company separately.
