December 1, 2025 – January 31, 2026
Avoid a $25 late fee by registering before the deadline.
Dog Licensing Costs

Please choose your dog license carefully when purchasing, as dog licenses are non-refundable and non-transferable. This is state law; the Lucas County Auditor cannot make any exceptions to this rule.
How to Purchase

In Person
Visit any participating agency and let them know you would like to purchase a dog license. (including all Toledo-Lucas County Public Library branches!)

Participating agencies may charge an administrative fee per application.

Payment options vary at each location.

Online
You can purchase online at co.lucas.oh.us/dogtags.

Our dog licensing website is updated! With this change, you will need to create a new online account, even if you have previously registered your dog online. After you create an account in the new system, you will be able to log in using this account moving forward.

By Mail
Print the 2026 Dog License Registration Form and mail it along with your payment to following address:

Lucas County Auditor's Office
Attn: Dog Licensing
One Government Center
Suite 600
Toledo, OH 43604
Multi-year licenses must be purchased online, by mail, or at the Auditor’s Office or Canine Care & Control.
After the licensing deadline of January 31st, dog licenses will be assessed a penalty fee of $25.00 per dog, in addition to the cost of the license. There are no exceptions to late fees, per Ohio law.
Special License Types
Dangerous Dog License
If your dog has been determined to be dangerous or vicious by Canine Care and Control, you must also purchase a Dangerous Dog License every year. This license costs $50.00 in addition to the cost of the normal license.
Transfers & Replacements
If you lose a dog license tag, you may purchase a replacement tag from the Lucas County Auditor's Office for $5.00.
If you sell a dog, you must complete a Transfer Certificate and send it to the Auditor's Office. The cost to complete an ownership transfer is $5.00. Remember, licenses stay with the dog, not the owner, so you cannot transfer a license from one dog to another dog.
